However, the roommate’s Celica is running and driving, and is at the exhaust shop getting a new manifold-back setup.

Kinja'd!!!

It may be idling at 1500rpm, and slowly dripping coolant from two different spots, but it’s Roadkill ready.

The plan is that 24 hours from now, it and my roommate will be in Detroit for the Dream Cruise (I will not be there, I have work). Detroit is a 5-7 hour drive. This car has put on less than a mile under its own power in the past year. What can possibly go wrong?

Damn Toyota has built some tough old bastards. They really have to be down to straight junkyard status if you want them to die, and even then they still got some fight left in them.

That is a very Roadkill- like trip. I wish him luck.

Less visible rust. Is this the Benjamin Button of cars, rusting in reverse, or did you spend a whole bunch of time on that just now?

It’s a 22R and a 5-speed. Presumably it’ll be scuttling along after the apocalypse next to small-block Chevys and old Merc diesels.

It’s the camera angle. We have a lot more to patch.

Tell him to join the Woodward facebook group. If he has any issues, he can post up on there asking for help and I am sure he will get a least a few responses. It may be filled with people who act like douchebags and/or teens that like to make jokes, but there are a lot of people on there that are quite knowledgeable and wouldn't mind lending a hand.

It’s already got the warboyz livery. All you need now is some skulls on spikes, a kangaroo guard and some meshlink fencing to cover the windows.

Funny you should mention that, my friends 22RE jumped time just yesterday and destroyed itself.

I’m on the Woodward facebook group. Honestly, I’m more worried about the spaces in between here near Wisconsin Dells, WI, and there.

I wish it were rusting in reverse, that would be amazing!

this is the early 22R. 81-82 had dual row timing chains with metal guides. (83-84, single row, metal guides) you get timing chain failure a lot more on the late ones 85-95, as they had a single row timing chain with plastic guides...that wear out.

Dip it in a vat of phosphoric or HCl. That way the rust will come off *like* it was rusting in reverse... except leaving holes and thin metal behind. Crap. In all seriousness, acid dipping is cool as hell - we’ve got a tank here to clean up 300-series S/S at my place of work, and I’ve set up a barrel of high-concentration muriatic at home in the past to de-zinc and de-rust some pieces I was going to get re-hot-dipped.

This isn’t going to be a solid job. this is just a “patch it so I don’t die or get pulled over” job.

That’s what the previous owner of my Ranchero did, then Bondo. The combination of which maketh me desirous forthwith his wedding tackle to kick. Forsooth.

I did something similar for the Power Tour this year, my car hadn’t driven more than a mile or so for a parade in town. I started working on it about a month before hand, finally got to drive it 3 days before leaving for the tour. Thing was a champ for the entire long haul, this is definitely possible!
